Dear Witches:
Yuletide, the season of the Winter Solstice, marks the rebirth of the Sun and the return of light after the longest night. For witches, this is a sacred time of renewal, reflection, and manifestation. The witch becomes both guardian and guide—honoring the cycles of nature, tending to the hearth, and weaving intentions for the coming year. It’s a time to release the old, invite blessings, and strengthen the protective energies of home and spirit.

Mullein in the Witch’s Cupboard
Mullein, often called the “Hag’s Taper,” is a powerful herb of protection, courage, and spiritual illumination. Its tall stalks were once dipped in tallow and burned as candles during rituals. In a witch’s cupboard, mullein is used to:
- Ward off negative energies and spirits
- Strengthen psychic vision and dreamwork
- Bring courage and clarity during transformation
- Cleanse sacred spaces when burned as incense
Element: Fire
Planetary association: Saturn
Magical uses: Protection, courage, banishment, illumination
Cloves for Hearth and Home Protection
Cloves carry the warmth of the Sun and the strength of Fire. They are potent allies for protection, purification, and prosperity. When placed around the home or burned in ritual, cloves guard against negativity and invite harmony.
Element: Fire
Planetary association: Jupiter
Magical uses: Protection, prosperity, purification, love

You will need:
- A white candle (for purity and light)
- Dried mullein leaves
- Whole cloves
- A small bowl of salt (for grounding)
- A piece of paper and pen

- Speak aloud:
“By flame and herb, by earth and light,
I call my will this Yuletide night.
Mullein guard, and clove protect,
My home, my heart, my path direct.” - Burn the paper safely in the candle flame (or bury it in salt if fire is not possible).
- Repeat each night with a new intention, building energy and focus through the 12 nights.

Creating a Yuletide Altar
Your altar should reflect the balance of darkness and returning light. Include:
- Evergreen branches (symbol of eternal life)
- A sun symbol or gold candle (rebirth of the Sun)
- Mullein and cloves (protection and illumination)
- Crystals such as garnet, clear quartz, or citrine
- A bowl of salt or snow (purity and grounding)
- Bells or wind chimes (to call in positive spirits)
Place your altar near your hearth or a window where the morning light can touch it.
Elements and Moon Connection
Yuletide aligns with the element of Fire—representing transformation, warmth, and rebirth. The Moon during this season often falls in signs that encourage introspection and renewal, such as Capricorn or Cancer. Working with the waxing or full moon amplifies manifestation, while the waning moon supports release and cleansing.
Why Witches Create Spells During Yuletide
Yuletide is a liminal time—when the veil between the old year and the new is thin. Energy is potent for setting intentions, releasing burdens, and calling in blessings. Creating spells during this season aligns the witch’s will with the natural rhythm of rebirth, ensuring that the seeds planted now will grow strong as the light returns.
The 12 Nights of Intention
Each night represents a month of the coming year. By focusing on one intention per night, you weave a tapestry of purpose and magic that carries through the entire year.
